Sep 2004 - Movie Premiere A Dilly For Phyllis Diller
Wireless Flash Weird News - San Diego Film Festival
A movie premiere taking place Saturday (Oct. 2) in San Diego will be the end of an era for Phyllis Diller.
The comedienne is the subject of a new documentary, "Goodnight, We Love You," that details the events that led her to retire from stage performance in May, 2002, after a final Las Vegas show.
Diller admits she's "three years from 90" and decided that while she loved that one hour on the stage, the details of getting to the gig, rehearsing, interviews and photographs became "...too much of a physical workout."
In addition, she admits that modern airports "are too big. I needed a wheelchair to get through them."
The Diller documentary premieres Saturday at the San Diego Film Festival and she considers the performance her last will and testament as far as her comedy is concerned.
Despite retiring from stage performances, Diller is not retiring in any sense of the word. She spends much of her time painting and says she has become accomplished over the years.
In her words, "I used to do only faces. Then I worked up to ovals, which I turned into faces. Now I can do anything -- even cows and trucks."
