After spending 19 years on the road with Phyllis Diller, Palmdale resident Ingrid Chapman is something of an expert on the pioneering comedian. So it was only natural that the maker of “Goodnight, We Love You,” a documentary about Diller’s last show, should contact Chapman for the inside scoop. The film, by Gregg Barson, is currently making the rounds at film festivals across the country, including the Newport Beach Film Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and the Las Vegas Comedy Festival.
“It’s a bit hard for me to look back and judge it impartially because I know just about everyone in it,” Chapman said. Chapman was a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, when she met Diller, who enlisted her help in organizing her jokes. “This was before computers and she needed her gags put in order,” Chapman said.
After Chapman began a career in public relations and advertising, Diller called her again and offered her a position as her road manager. In “Goodnight, We Love You,” Chapman recalls traveling with Diller and other “inside stuff.” She’s been interviewed for other shows on A&E and the E! Entertainment network.
Chapman who now runs her own public relations firm in the Antelope Valley, said she still keeps in touch with Diller, who recently underwent surgery to repair damage to her neck sustained in a fall. “I just really learned the value of a sense of humor with her,” Chapman said. “She is funny, she thinks funny and that laugh is real.”
