Nov 2004 - POLLY PELUSO "Goodnight, We Love You" -- Phyllis Diller

One day last summer I was invited by Candace Cazau of Coast Hotels to be

present at the event at the Suncoast Casino/Hotel to interview Phyllis Diller announcing her retirement from show biz and all those thousands of touring shows she had been performing in. Phyllis Diller is a comedian whom the world had come to love. Phyllis is so much fun, witty and always current in her poking fun at whatever was happening. But of course, we came to know Fang, her husband and that was a barrel of fun right there. Phyllis was 84 years old when she threw in the sponge. And my goodness what a sight to be seen on the night she told us all Goodbye. There was Rich Little, Lilly Tomlin, JoAnne Worley, Tony Danza, Kay Ballard, Rip Taylor, David Brenner, Marty Allen and the list of celebrities goes on.

Gregg Barson of Mansfield Avenue Productions "Goodnight, We Love You "

has produced a delightful 90-minute into the life of the real Phyllis Diller. Phyllis lets us see inside herself as well as her own personal life with her son, her own home and her past secretaries that have a club all of their own. Phyllis knew how to market herself until we all knew to look for her skinny legs in those little ankle boots she designed, her hair was always awful messed up, her laughter,(which should be canned and should be sold so we could buy it) was so wild and funny that the whole show was a wonderful, joyful audience. You never knew what would come out of her mouth next: "I have a phone in my car now - I hit a booth." "Fang thought oral sex was when you talked about sex". "Fang's idea of a night out was to move the TV into the garage and watch out there".

And then of course what about those crazy dresses she wore! In her real life Phyllis let us see her rooms of clothes, rooms of shoes, wigs, costumes and everything was meticulously organized. As was her kitchen, her desk. When she was on tour - she was always on time and to insure this she would take several clocks with her. She took all of her cooking needs with her also as she no longer liked hotel meals. She would take a trunk with an oven, pots and pans, everything she needed to cook with. Sometimes she would invite friends to eat with her at the hotel. Phyllis was friends with the whole world. She would be invited to the Palace in London when she was there, the White House, Bob Hope's home wherever he was. She gives credit to Bob Hope for much of her success.

From personal experience of the times I would meet Phyllis in Hollywood (I was an agent and columnist), as well as here in Las Vegas, she was a very down-to-earth person that would welcome some conversation.

I used to see her at the big Thalian's Balls in L.A. because at that time, the man who backed my agency was Milton Shoog, a very wealthy man with an important Foundation and was an important contributor to the Thalian's Ball that Debbie Reynolds and Ruta Lee, Rip Taylor help produce. Milton would give me one of the tables which cost $12,000 for me to invite movie industry related people too. He took many tables for himself and his friends. When I moved over here to Las Vegas I would be invited to all kinds of events to write up and this was where I would see Phyllis again as she would have art showings and she has currently decided to continue with her art showings. She would share compliments. At that last event when she was being interviewed for world wide news - she complimented me and named some older movie actress that she thought I looked like. Her life encompassed giving others something nice to remember her for. There is only one Phyllis Diller and no one will ever be able to fill her shoes so "Goodnight, We Love You" and we will miss you.
